In light of our upcoming Camo Shoot on June 16th and as a reminder to all the hunting and gun enthusiasts out there, we have a guest post from John O’Conner on hearing protection.    We hope you enjoy his article below and you can check out his blog here: http://bloggingwjohno.blogspot.com/

Enjoy Hunting Safely by Protecting Your Hearing Health

Most people are familiar with the fact that being around loud noises on a consistent basis can damage their hearing.  To many people, they acknowledge this information by trying to keep the volumes lowered to a moderate level on their television and other electronics.  While this is a great step to take to protect hearing, protecting your hearing during outdoor sports such as duck hunting is also necessary.

Learn How Hunting Can Damage a Person’s Hearing

Just a single shot from a rifle or shotgun can change a person’s ability to hear.  Many times, people do not recognize they have lost a partial ability to hear because the damage may be minute.  However, in some people’s cases, the damage can be severe and instantly noticeable.  People, who duck hunt on a regular basis without hearing protection, put themselves at high risk for losing a portion or all of their hearing ability.

While this may be scary news to digest, there are easy, affordable, and simple solutions that allow hunters to keep duck hunting and to do it safely.  Wearing proper hearing protection is a valuable benefit to anyone who will be using a firearm during target shooting or during actual hunting.  It is also important for anyone who will be near someone who is shooting a gun to wear hearing protection as well.  A person who is observing or hunting with another person can experience hearing damage just as easily as the person who fires the gun can experience hearing damage.

My father was a hunter for many years and often when out in the field for a hunt did not pay much attention to his hearing protection. Hearing loss can occur gradually and for this reason my father did not think he needed to wear hearing protection. He felt that since he could not feel any symptoms why should he have to wear any protection. In this case he was wrong and each time he fired his gun without protection he was damaging his eardrums further and further. Now in his 70’s my father is affected severely by noise induced hearing loss. In order to help increase his hearing levels he must wear hearing aids. Although hunting was not the only cause of his hearing loss, his doctor feels that it did play a major role in damaging his ears.

Hearing Protection Devices for Hunters

There are many devices out there that can help protect people’s hearing such as electronic earmuffs or standard earmuffs when they go hunting.  These function as headsets, are comfortable to wear, and provide great protection against loud noises discharged from firearms.  Electronic earmuffs function with wire transmitters that help people to better pick up on low sound frequencies.  This can be a helpful feature when a person needs to hear low-volume footsteps or voices while hunting.Earplugs are available for hearing protection as well.  Each of these protective devices is usually available in gun and ammunition retail stores.

Hearing is a sense that we often take for granted. We often do not realize it until it is gone and once it is gone, it is gone for good. In order to ensure healthy hearing in the future, make sure to wear proper hearing protection the next time you and your friends decided to head out on a duck hunting trip.

Hi my name is John O’Connor, I am a father, outdoorsman and passionate about living a healthy lifestyle.  Over the past few years I have become more and more interested in hearing loss.  My father and grandfathers, who are and were all hunters, are affected by hearing loss.  I feel that there is a general lack of understanding around the issue and it is our job to spread awareness where we can.  Check out my new blog at bloggingwjohno.blogspot.com!

We’re shining this week’s Sponsor Spotlight on Greystone Castle Sporting Club

Greystone Castle has generously donated a 2 day/1 night all-inclusive duck hunting/sporting clays package for 4  hunters (with a retail value of $2,800).  This item will be up for grabs at our fall banquet in our live auction.

For over 20 years, Greystone Castle, located 90 miles west of the DFW metroplex, has been considered one of the elite destinations in the sporting world. In fact, their name has become synonymous with quality in the hunting industry. What’s both unique and compelling about Greystone is that it can be so many things to so many different sportsmen. To the upland gunner, large fields of sorghum, millet, and switch grass bring memories of great gun dogs, flushing pheasants, bobwhite covey rises, and days in the field with friends. For the big game hunter, it’s 6,000 acres that offer some of the best whitetail hunting in the country and over 40 species of exotic game. For the clay shooter, it’s the great sporting clays and pyramid 5-stand courses that will test the best of shooters. And for the avid angler, their trophy bass lakes present year round opportunities for tight lines on largemouth and hybrid stripers.

What appeals to all visitors at Greystone are its top-of-the-line accommodations and gourmet meals. There are five elegantly decorated suites capable of hosting more than 30 guests, a dining room complete with a full-time executive chef, spacious conference facilities, a swimming pool with hot tub, and just outside the castle walls, a scenic lookout affords a breathtaking vista of the entire estate.

The ownership and staff have been dedicated to creating one of the finest sporting destinations found anywhere in the world. Long-term habitat improvement and wildlife management has made Greystone an extraordinary hunting destination. This coupled with the unique castle facility and outstanding customer service makes Greystone Castle a place without equal.

Trip Description: Arrive early-afternoon and, upon check in, hone your shooting skills on our challenging sporting clays course. Then, enjoy a scenic tour of the ranch followed by a gourmet dinner prepared by our executive chef. After a relaxing night in your own private room, wake up to a great continental breakfast….then it’s off the duck blind for a morning of great dog work and fast shooting action. Depart after lunch.
